When buying diamond jewellery in India, clarity is the most misunderstood of the 4Cs. Jewellers push high clarity grades because they cost more — but the truth is that most clarity differences are invisible to the naked eye. Understanding clarity grades saves Indian buyers lakhs without sacrificing visual beauty. This guide from Auric Jewels explains every clarity grade, shows you what actually matters, and helps you make the smartest decision for your budget.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity measures the presence of tiny imperfections inside (inclusions) and on the surface (blemishes) of a diamond. These formed naturally during the diamond's creation under extreme heat and pressure. A trained gemologist examines the diamond under 10x magnification and assigns a grade based on the size, number, position, and nature of these imperfections.

The critical point: clarity is graded under 10x magnification. You do not wear a diamond under a microscope. What matters is how the diamond looks to your naked eye in normal viewing conditions — across a dinner table, in a meeting room, in a photograph.

The Complete Clarity Scale

The Sweet Spot — VS2 and SI1

A VS2 (Very Slightly Included 2) diamond has minor inclusions that are somewhat easy for a trained gemologist to see under 10x magnification — but completely invisible to the naked eye. This is the grade that the most informed diamond buyers choose. You get a clean-looking diamond at 30-40% less than VVS grades.

At Auric Jewels, VS2 clarity diamonds are our most popular grade for engagement rings, solitaire pendants, and diamond earrings.

SI1 — The Smart Budget Choice

SI1 (Slightly Included 1) diamonds have inclusions noticeable under 10x magnification but usually invisible to the naked eye. This is the grade for buyers who want to maximise carat size or invest the savings in a better cut grade. An SI1 diamond typically costs 10-15% less than a VS2 of the same specifications.

Important caveat: SI1 quality varies. Some SI1 diamonds are eye-clean while others have inclusions near the table (top surface) that may be subtly visible. At Auric Jewels, our consultants hand-select SI1 diamonds that are eye-clean — you see every stone before purchasing.

Why Indian Buyers Overpay for Clarity

The Jeweller Markup Problem

Many jewellers in India — particularly chain retailers — push VVS and IF grade diamonds because the profit margin is higher. They tell customers that only "flawless" is acceptable, creating anxiety about grades that are perfectly beautiful. The truth: a VS2 diamond set in a ring looks identical to a VVS1 diamond to every person who sees it. The difference exists only on the certification report and the price tag.

The Real Priority Order

If you have a budget of ₹3,00,000 for a diamond ring, here is how to prioritise the 4Cs for maximum visual impact:

  1. Cut — Excellent or Very Good. This is non-negotiable. Cut creates sparkle.
  2. Carat — Maximise within budget. Size is the first thing people notice.
  3. Colour — G or H. Appears white in any setting.
  4. Clarity — VS2 or SI1 (eye-clean). Save your budget for the above three.

This priority order is the opposite of what most traditional Indian jewellers recommend — but it is what every gemologist and diamond expert in the world agrees on.

Clarity for Different Jewellery Types

How to Verify Clarity — Read the Certification Report

Every certified diamond from Auric Jewels comes with an IGI or GIA report that includes a clarity plot — a diagram showing the exact location, type, and size of every inclusion. Learning to read this plot takes 5 minutes and gives you complete transparency into what you are buying.

Key Things to Check

  • Inclusion position: Inclusions near the edge are less visible than those at the centre (table)
  • Inclusion type: Feathers and clouds are less noticeable than dark crystals
  • Number of inclusions: One inclusion in SI1 is different from five scattered inclusions
