What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity measures the presence of tiny imperfections inside (inclusions) and on the surface (blemishes) of a diamond. These formed naturally during the diamond's creation under extreme heat and pressure. A trained gemologist examines the diamond under 10x magnification and assigns a grade based on the size, number, position, and nature of these imperfections.

The critical point: clarity is graded under 10x magnification. You do not wear a diamond under a microscope. What matters is how the diamond looks to your naked eye in normal viewing conditions — across a dinner table, in a meeting room, in a photograph.

The Sweet Spot — VS2 and SI1

VS2 — The Recommended Grade

A VS2 (Very Slightly Included 2) diamond has minor inclusions that are somewhat easy for a trained gemologist to see under 10x magnification — but completely invisible to the naked eye. This is the grade that the most informed diamond buyers choose. You get a clean-looking diamond at 30-40% less than VVS grades.

SI1 (Slightly Included 1) diamonds have inclusions noticeable under 10x magnification but usually invisible to the naked eye. This is the grade for buyers who want to maximise carat size or invest the savings in a better cut grade. An SI1 diamond typically costs 10-15% less than a VS2 of the same specifications.
